Town Closing in On Fleetwood Forward Burns
Thursday, 3rd Jun 2021 12:43

TWTD understands the Blues are closing in on the signing of Fleetwood forward Wes Burns.

Former Wales U21 international Burns, 26, started his career at Bristol City and will be well known to new Town CEO Mark Ashton.

We understand Town’s interest is at an advanced stage and the 26-year-old is almost certainly one of the players Ashton was referring to when he suggested a couple of signings could be completed in the next week.

If the deal goes through then Burns will be the first addition of Paul Cook's time as boss and since the change of ownership at Portman Road.

It may well be that right-back Janoi Donacien could be part of the deal having spent the second half of last season on loan at Highbury. Town recently took up a year's option on the former Accrington man's contract largely in order to secure either a fee or use him as a bargaining chip in swap deals.

While at Ashton Gate Burns spent time on loan at Forest Green Rovers, Oxford United, Cheltenham, Fleetwood and Aberdeen.

Having made six senior starts and 48 sub appearances for the Robins, the Cardiff-born right-sided attacker or right-back returned to Fleetwood on a permanent basis in January 2017.

Burns, who has made 134 starts and 42 sub appearances, scoring 23 times since joining the Cod Army on a permanent basis, is contracted to Fleetwood for another season after an option on his contract was recently triggered.

Last season Burns netted six times, including his side’s goal in their final-day 3-1 defeat to the Blues at Portman Road.

It feels so weird to be so strongly linked to players most fans have actually said they want, who will incur a fee. I love it!

Wes Burns is quality at this level. If this is our first signing then that's a real sign of intent. I'd be delighted if this one goes through.

Interested in what folk think of him and particularly if there is a reason for his low-ish goal tally? eg I'm guessing he is a top assists guy? Excited for these new faces

I don't know much if anything about him. Based on his stats he is clearly not a prolific goalscorer but I see that he is a pretty versatile player being able to play at right back too. Lots of folk with good things to say about him though so no complaints from me, hopefully he will be a great success should he sign up. Good stuff.

So has been signed as a forward or a right back ?

He has been signed as a right back or wing back he was in team of the week as a right back hence the low goal ratio or high for a defender

Yes - good fit, played right back at Portman Road and scored. Donacien was obviously unavailable to play for Fleetwood that day, so Burns dropped back into that position. Looked competent enough and could be good cover for KYV (KYV often played left back at Col U so gives us another option).

Expect Max Power to follow, who funny enough was scoring very highly towards end of season with MOM performances for Sunderland but had been playing several of these matches as a right back as well, rather than playing his midfield role.

Only noticed him in game v us and was man of the match I reckon. Although not tricky playing Ipswich

I think we're looking at him replacing Edwards and playing wide right in Cooks 4-2-3-1 formation.

Having watched the Fleetwood game he was definitely a standout performer who I thought looked an excellent prospect. I've seen him play in just that isolated game but if his performances are anywhere near that level then he's going to be an asset. An upgrade on Edwards for sure. An exciting talent

40 years on from being the best in Europe we should be grateful for paying two-bob for some bloke from Fleetwood a 'plaice" 3 years ago 90% of Town fans couldn't find on a map - hey ho.

176 appearances , 23 goals ....that means next season he will score 8 goals
Still planning on being a mid table league one side then
It's exciting times and most that is coming out of the club is positive but we do need the players to back it up ....remember lambert change the supporter base from 12k to 22k almost overnight but when results were poor it soon dropped back
Let's hope this guy follows the same path as Jamie Vardy did ...otherowse am still awaiting our 25 goal striker to appear

Looking good. Is a an attacking right back a forward or a right back that also likes to attack ? Trying to work out where he would slot in.

Please remember people that when we signed David Johnson from Bury everyone said about his goals to games ratio and the move up from league one to championship he scored 18 goals in 97 appearances for Bury before coming to us then played with better players around him and the rest is history a huge part of us going up to the premier league. This guy on the one game I saw is technically better than what we have the goals may come.

@cornishblu - if you read the article properly you would see that is a right sided winger or wing-back, NOT a central striker.
If he contributed 8 goals from those positions, along with numerous assists, he would easily be an upgrade on any player that has represented the club in those positions over the last 3 (maybe even 6 !) seasons !
