Ex-Derby County and Leeds United man poised to leave Cheltenham Town

CHELTENHAM TOWN ARE NOT IN A POSITION TO OFFER OUT OF CONTRACT PLAYERS NEW DEALS THIS SUMMER, AS PER A REPORT BY GLOUCESTERSHIRE LIVE.

Luke Varney, Will Boyle, Alex Addai, Chris Clements, Conor Thomas, Rhys Lovett, Josh Debayo, Dan Bowry, Archie Brennan, Jonte Smith and Rohan Ince are likely to all become free agents at the end of next month.

The League Two season has been finished meaning a few sides have started to announce their retained lists.

Cheltenham are currently sat in 5th position meaning they have the chance to fight for a place in the third tier next term via the Play-Offs.

Their boss Michael Duff has said: “I don’t know what my budget will be or what division we will be in so I am not in a position to offer people anything. I feel for the players as they want to know.”

He added: “We have got ideas of the areas we would like to strengthen but that depends who we keep and who we don’t. We have the skeleton of a team already under contract for next season and beyond and that’s what we wanted.

“I wanted continuity and not 15 in and 15 out so it would be about putting meat on the bones. But again I don’t know what the budget is or what league we will be in. If we go up we will definitely have the smallest budget but we won’t be moaning about it.”

Varney, who is 37 years old, is out of contract this summer after two seasons at Cheltenham. He has scored 21 goals over the past two years for the fourth tier side.

The experienced forward, formerly of Derby County, Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers and Ipswich Town, will have to weigh up his options over the coming months ahead.
