Leeds have had their fair share of players that have needed a bit of a reality check in recent years, players who have, either through blind vanity or clouded idiocy, have cost the team through one action or another… a certain Paul Rachubka immediately springs to mind.
But under the stewardship of Marcelo Bielsa, a man famous for his down-to-earth demeanour and surgical preciseness, such players would never excel or be fully accepted, especially by the fans.
One man who ran dangerously close to being rejected recently is current number one, Kiko Casilla.
The 32-year old never truly endeared himself to the Elland Road faithful in the second half of last season after joining the Whites from Real Madrid in January, being far too laid back and making silly mistakes, one of which was hugely costly in the play-off semi-final second leg defeat to Derby County at Elland Road, a mistake which contributed to Leeds demise last season.
However, this season Casilla has been a completely different player, arguably the best goalkeeper in the division, certainly the best record so far and has been highly assured but in possession of the ball and under attack from all oppositions.
So with only ten goals conceded, putting Leeds on course to having the best defensive record this decade, just what is the reason for a sudden maturity between the sticks?
Footy Accumulators have revealed the intimacies of a rather blunt conversation between Leeds’ goalkeeping coach Marcos Abad and the in-form stopper, who simply said… “Stop f*@king about”.
